MEDITATIONS is the story of improvisational time capsules, moments of musical meditation. The spontaneous recordings were inspired by the memory of David Cain’s composer-mentor, Dr. Roque Cordero. Cain says: “Roque taught me the importance of connecting to musical flow through daily improvisation practice, leading to idea development, orchestration... resulting in possibilities that might exist outside the normal boxes of melody, harmony, modes, and scales.”

Describing his piano improvisations as ‘meditations with the muse’, David Cain brings together a lifetime of musical influences that ‘honor the past and welcome the future’. Before recording each improvisation, Cain would “ask the muse for inspiration and guidance,” then close his eyes and play. The results: each improvisation creates its own atmosphere: elegiac and ecstatic, soulful and blithe… Here are 19 meditations along with their date of birth.
